Worldwide animal health statistics reflected in the
region |

Dear Industry Colleague,
Based on
2008 statistics, the worldwide animal health industry is worth
US$ 19,190 million.
Considering the breakdown of animal health market by
species, companion animal (pets) and cattle top the list
with 41.3% and
26.8% market
share respectively.
The Middle
East region with its cultural/religious aspect and
continuously increasing expatriate population is
pushing up the numbers for both cattle and pets. The
region has therefore embarked on the path of animal
healthcare. Most recently the emirate of Abu Dhabi
has confirmed plans to immunise
5 million animals
against seven dangerous infectious disease.

Five million animals to get disease jabs |
|
Five million animals in the emirate
will be immunised against dangerous infectious diseases by the
middle of next year, according to officials. The campaign, which
started yesterday with 37,850 shots given to camels, cattle,
sheep and goats in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia, will run
until May .

Vets Oppose Proposed New Medicines Category POM EA |
|
The British Veterinary Association
and its divisions have combined forces to oppose a new
veterinary medicines category proposed by the Veterinary
Medicines Directorate. The VMD published a concept note' for
comment which suggests a new category of POM EA (Extended
Administration) under which a veterinary surgeon would make a
clinical assessment and, if appropriate, issue a Veterinary
Permission of Extended Administration (VPEA) allowing the animal
holder to obtain the prescribed POM EA medicine (from a
veterinarian, pharmacist or SQP) for up to 36 months from the
date of authorisation.

FDA Issues Alert on Pet Insulin Product Due to Formulation
Problems |

Veterinarians are being warned to
closely monitor dogs and cats receiving Vetsulin because the
product may have varying amounts of crystalline zinc insulin in
the formulation, according to an alert sent out Nov. 2 by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary
Medicine. Vetsulin, which is manufactured by Intervet/Schering-Plough
Animal Health, is a porcine insulin zinc suspension used to
treat diabetes in animals.
